Every February this fun little guy comes out of his house to let us know if there will be an early spring or more weeks of winter.  This easy kid’s paper bag puppet is fun to make and a great way to participate in Groundhog’s day.  Have more Groundhog's day fun and make our Groundhog's day treats.

What you'll need:

  • One lunch bag size paper bag

  • Groundhog pattern printout – we have 2 patterns: Saw his shadow – 6 more weeks of winter/ Didn’t see his shadow – Spring comes early

  • Colored construction paper:  Brown/Light Brown/Yellow/Pink/Blue/Purple

  • Scissors

  • Small pom-pom for the nose

  • 2 Googly eyeballs for the winter version

  • Colored pencil or crayon to color sunglasses for early spring version

  • Glue Stick & White glue

How to make it:

Print out the Kidfunideas Groundhog Pattern of your choice - either early spring or long winter.   Cut out the pattern pieces in the color indicated.

  1. For the Winter Groundhog puppet:

    • Glue the teeth to the groundhog head shape, and then glue the muzzle on top of the teeth.   Glue the entire head shape to the back bottom of the paper bag

    • Glue the hat shape to the groundhog and add the paper beanie top next.  Use colored pencil or crayon to draw in the brim on the hat.

    • Glue on the eyes and nose next.

    • Lift the flap on the bag bottom and glue on the groundhog body.

    • Take the scarf shape and use a colored pencil or crayon to draw in the fringe at the bottom of the scarf and the knot at the top of the scarf.  Next, take your scissors and cut some slits in the bottom of the scarf to make it look like fringe.

    • Glue the scarf to the groundhog neck.

    • Last, glue the winter sign to a piece of construction paper and trim away the excess.  Glue the sign to the groundhog’s hand.

      • That’s it for the winter groundhog!

  1.  For the Early Spring Groundhog puppet:

    • Glue the teeth to the groundhog head shape, and then glue the muzzle on top of the teeth.  Glue the entire head shape to the back bottom of the paper bag.

    • Cut out the sunglasses shape and color with crayon or colored pencil.  Glue to the face of the groundhog.  Add the pretty flower next to one ear and add some detail on the flower with a colored pencil or crayon. Glue on the pom-pom nose.

    • Lift the flap on the bag bottom and glue on the groundhog body.

    • Glue on the flower lei next and use a crayon or colored pencil to add details to the flowers.

    • Take your scissors and cut slits into the bottom of the skirt to look like fringe.  Glue the skirt to the groundhog waist.

    • Last, glue the early spring signs to a piece of construction paper and trim away the excess.  Glue the sign to the groundhog’s hand.

      • That’s it for the early spring groundhog!
