Johnny Appleseed Craft

Carrying his cooking pot on top of his head, Johnny Appleseed walked the land planting his apple trees wherever he went.    This puppet is fun to make as part of Apple Week.  Just download the pattern, and in no time you’ll be off on an adventure.  Don’t forget to check out our other Apple theme activities and projects!

What you'll need:

  • Paper bag

  • Construction  paper: Black/Blue/Green/Brown/White

  • Aluminum foil

  • Popsicle stick

  • 2 googly eyes – large size

  • Crayons to decorate

  • Stapler

  • Tape

  • Scissors

  • Glue Stick & White glue

  • Johnny Appleseed Pattern

How to make it:

  1. Print out the Johnny Appleseed pattern.  Cut out the shapes in the color construction paper indicated.

  2. Assemble the head:  Glue the face shape to cardstock and cut out.  Color the face with crayons or pencils.  You can add rosy cheeks or freckles.  Attach the face to the flap of the paper bag with a glue stick.  Next, attach the hair to the forehead with a glue stick.  For the cooking pot, wrap and tape aluminum foil to the card stock cooking pot and attach to the back with tape. Glue the pot on top of the hair next.  Add eyes with white glue.

  3. Add the arms: For the arm on the right side - attach the hand to the backside of the sleeve end with tape or glue and attach the arm to the bag with tape in the fold next to where one shoulder would be.  For the arm on the left side - attach the hand on the sleeve end like the other arm but, attach it to the bag in the fold next to where the other shoulder would be with the backside facing out. We will be folding it over to show the right side when we add the knapsack.

  4. Assembling the body: Take your shirt piece and glue it to the front of your bag just under the chin area with a glue stick.  Attach the vest pieces next.  Attach the feet to the bottom of the pants with a glue stick, then turn your pants over and attach the pants to the bag just below the shirt.

  5. Details:  Use crayons, colored pencils, or markers to draw in details like buttons, pockets, etc.

  6. For the apple sack, use your scissors and make a snip in the knot area of the knapsack.  Take the Popsicle stick, and thread it through the sack.    Secure the stick in place with tape in the back.

  7. Place the apple knapsack over the left side shoulder and tape the stick over the vest.  Bend the arm at the elbow and glue the hand to the handle of the knapsack stick.
