Here’s a fun, super inexpensive 4th of July Flag project.  For just pennies, you can make an adorable flag that you can hang for the 4th of July or year-round.  Made with the free paint stir sticks from the hardware store, they are a  perfect craft for kids.

 

 

What you'll need:

• 8 Paint Stirrers from the Hardware or Paint Store                            (You can usually get them free of charge)

• Acrylic craft paint: Red and White

• Ribbon

• Sponge brush

• Mod Podge - glossy

• Duct tape – We used white

• Blue Star Printout                                                               (Print on to White Cardstock for best results)

 

How to make it:

1. Cover your table with newspaper or butcher paper and lay out your paint sticks.  Paint stirrers usually have writing on just one side.   Paint 4 of the sticks red and 4 of the paint sticks white on the side without the writing.  Set them aside until they are fully dry.  You will probably need 2-3 coats of paint.

2. Once your paint sticks are dry, flip them over and butt them up against the long edges alternating red and white colors.  Make sure that the handles are all on the same side. 

3. Carefully tape the paint stirrers together on the back with the duct tape keeping them lined up as best as you can.  Try not to tape over the open areas formed by the handles.  Once they are all taped in the back, flip your stirrers over to the colored side.  This will be the base for your flag.

4. Print out the blue and white star piece below on to white card stock and trim away the excess paper.

5. Using Mod Podge, glue the star square to the upper left-hand corner of the striped sticks.

6. Let the Mod Podge dry and once dry, apply two layers of Mod Podge to the star image and the sticks, letting each coat dry before applying the next coat.

7. To hang your pretty flag, flip the stick flag over and apply a loop of ribbon to the center back of your flag duct tape.

That’s it – a super quick, inexpensive 4th of July decoration that looks adorable!
