I've Got my Eye on You - October craft challenge!

I've got my eye on you! October Craft Challenge

Halloween is just around the corner and for this month’s craft challenge we chose googly eyeballs. My son Jake was fascinated with this great big bag of craft eyeballs. “What can we make with them”? he asked. Hmm, what indeed, I thought. I could just make a silly picture but that seemed way too easy and Halloween was coming up, so I wanted to do something slightly spooky. Then I glanced at the magazines on the table and inspiration struck. So here it is –

Spooky Kooky Gallery.

How do you transform a magazine picture into Haunted House Art? Easy- some black paper, googly eyes and a little imagination and you can have a gallery full of spooky kooky artwork. This easy kid’s craft is quick to put together and super cheap to make. You can also make them with your own kid’s photos for a fun classroom wall activity.

What you'll need:

  • Any magazine with full page face pictures of people or pets – Tip: Magazines

that have lots of Cosmetic ads are perfect for this.

  • If you don’t have magazines – you can take school class photos and enlarge them on a copier to 8 ½ x 11” and it will work for this project also.

  • Large Googly eyeballs – Round and oval work well

  • Scissors

  • Glue Stick and white glue

  • Ribbon for hanging

  • 2 sheets of Black Construction paper – 9 x 12”

  • Optional: Metallic markers to decorate frame.

How to make it:

  1. Page through your magazine and select a picture where there is a full face image – like in a mascara ad. Carefully remove the page from the magazine.

  2. If there are a lot of background images, trim away the background and mount your picture in the center of one of the black papers.

  3. Take your other black paper and cut a rectangle in the center large enough to frame your picture. Glue down the trimmed out boarder to the front of your picture to complete your frame.

  4. Flip your picture over and tape some ribbon to the back for hanging

  5. Now, to create the spooky look for your picture, select googly eyeballs that are the same size or a little larger than the ones in your picture. When you have the eyes that you like, glue them on top of your magazine picture’s eyes. It is amazing how spooky this can make your picture.

  6. Take your metallic marker and make curly lines to embellish your frame and you are done. Experiment and hang a bunch then wait for the laughs – you’re sure to hear a bunch.

  7. For variation, you can use this technique with large photos of animals too.
